Ford Mustang on the cover

Ford Mustang on the cover

I had already teased it briefly on Facebook: my photo of a Ford Mustang on the cover of Sport and Luxury Cars. This fairly young magazine has a nice peculiarity compared to other automotive magazines: it doesn’t show the table of contents on the cover, but a main motif with two supplements and that’s it. This is rather rare these days and calls for an expressive motif. I actually had two and a half days for the whole production. That’s what you need, because the first pictures were taken on a former army airfield, followed by a production on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and two days later on the small circuit in Hockenheim. In addition, the editorial team decided to produce photos of the Mustang in a wild drift, for which we again made the airfield asphalt unsafe.

None of this would have been possible if the drivers involved had not all been so patient and thoughtful. I would like to thank Horst von Saurma and Sebastian Koch, as well as Michael Schumacher and Frank Mäling, with all due respect. The editorial team also gave me the time I needed. And it was worth it to take this time, because this is not (or no longer) usual in the editorial environment, where the publishing house management demands that you do something like this in one day. But that’s not possible. You need an editorial team that makes this possible. Even if it all costs a lot of money, not to mention the track rental and the drivers.

But anyway, I enjoyed it and I’m quite happy with the result. Of course, I can always find something that could be done even better, but that brings us back to the subject of time and money. Let’s just leave that aside and be happy about 5 liters of displacement, 8 cylinders and an actual measured 452 hp in quite acceptable form by American standards. Photographer’s heart, what more could you want?
