A few days ago, I was seriously asked if I had any references in the field of children’s photography: “Do you also photograph children?” I then thought about it for a long time…, no, seriously, I turned around and opened the cupboard behind my desk, there were probably still some specimens there.
On the other hand, the title of the magazine means little in itself, after all I have also photographed for many issues of “Penthouse”. Yes, of course, but not: no nudes, but motorcycles. Someone had to do it…
Children and family photos are a very classic part of photography. For me, it’s people in front of the camera to whom I want to deliver the best possible photo of themselves. The client doesn’t play a role here. I take family photos with the same effort as an advertising photo, it’s the result that counts. Of course, many people get confused at first when I tell them how much time they should plan for the photo. Because I like to book a make-up artist. Or we can even do the styling, anything goes. Considering how much time used to be spent on painted family portraits, things move quickly in photography.
However, once the shoot is complete, the picture is by no means ready for the wall; post-processing is an effort that should not be underestimated, also in terms of time. There are still many steps to go: The technical selection to delete everything that is unusable. The author’s review, which visualizes my idea first. Then comes the RAW conversion to make the images accessible to the customer in the first place. The next step is the selection by the customer, followed by the final retouching, and then approval by the customer and myself for printing. We do this ourselves up to A1 format, or larger with a trusted service provider. And at the end there is the framing or lamination, particularly elegant on Dibond behind acrylic, also known as Diasec. It doesn’t get any higher quality than this, and I know from all the customers who have such photos hanging on their walls that they never want anything else again.
So, you can ask me the question “Do you also photograph children?” at any time, but I no longer have to answer it, do I?
